RESET YOUR MINDSET

Romans 8:5-11
I. Evaluate your Mindset – search me, O God
II. Surrender your Mindset – you are controlled by the Spirit
III. Redirect your Mindset – things above, transform, capture, God-thoughts
IV. Encourage your Mindset – The Spirit can help you change! Resurrection life now and yet to come.

I. Evaluating our Mindset (Romans 8:5-8)
5 Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;
7 the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. 8 Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.

-The word “mind” refers to disposition or attitude.                                                  

1. Ask, “Is this what God wants?”
2. Ask, “Is this consistent with life and peace?”
3. Ask, “Does this bring honor to God, or reflect hostility to God?”
4. Ask, “Who is in control here? The Holy Spirit or Me?”

“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24

1 Corinthians 2:10 “The Spirit searches all things….”

II. Surrendering our Mindset  (Romans 8:9-10)

9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.

By surrendering our hearts and minds to the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

“if the Spirit of God lives in you” (or you “have the Spirit of Christ”), and “if Christ is in you.”


III. Redirecting our Mindset

Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-- his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Colossians 3:1-3 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

2 Corinthians 10:5 …we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Philippians 4:8 Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

IV. Encouraging our Mindset (Romans 8:11)

11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.
