NLT -Hebrews 12:1 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge cloud of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress.  And let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us.”

1. Understand the primary source of all my sins.

Mark 7:21 says, “For from within” underline that phrase, “out of a person’s heart come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder”.

prideful, envious, gluttonous, angry, greedy, slothful, and lustful; and pride

Our goal in this series is to do some replacement ministry.  If we remove pride, we want to replace it with humility.

Pride is defined, as excessive belief in one’s own abilities.
pride occurs when I think that I am better than someone else.
Pride occurs when I place the needs of others behind my own needs.

The first way that we are going to deal with our pride is to acknowledge that we have a problem with it.
2. Acknowledge my problem with pride.
A. Proverbs 11:2Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
B. Proverbs 13:10 Pride leads to conflict; those who take advice are wise.

In marriage you can either be right or you can be happy, but you can’t be both.  Pride leads to heartache, fighting, and divorce.
C. Prov. 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.

D. Prov. 29:23 Pride ends in humiliation, while humility brings honor. “Pride ends in humiliation.” So what’s the answer?
Humility brings honor.

It starts with confession. I John 1:9 “If we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong.”
confession; “to agree with”.
3. Humble myself before God.
Humility is pride in God.
humility is the ultimate act of strength.
But as long as you are prideful, then you are in a place where God opposes you.
James 4:6-7 But he gives us even more grace to stand against such evil desires. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but favors the humble.” 7 So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Hebrews 12:2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.

Its pride properly placed, not in us, but in God.
There are postures of humility. We practice them often; heads bowed in prayer, or kneeling down to pray.

Heavenly Father, thank You that You want us to finish well.
God, we want to lay aside all of the sin that hinders our progress from being all that You have called us to be.
So God, we acknowledge our problem with pride today.  As seeing ourselves as god, and not allowing You to be God in our lives.
Today, we humble ourselves before you.  We fix our eyes on Jesus, who gave us the model of strength and humility.
As we humble ourselves, may You decrease our pride and increase our humility.  Amen.
