30And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: 31But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
John 20:30-31 KJV

I) THE DEFINITION OF A MIRACLE
  • a miracle is not a coincidence, not simply a rare event, or not something merely out of the ordinary.
  • a miracle is the work of God in the world of humanity in a way that transcends human capacity to accomplish.
II) THE PURPOSE OF MIRACLES

the word Messiah is Hebrew for “the anointed.”

In other words, the proof of Jesus’ Messiah-ship was His words and works. The words He spoke, and the miracles He did were all the witness He needed.
  • He wasn’t born to become a king; He already was the King of kings and Lord of lords.
  • He came to become a sacrifice and to pay the price we could not pay.
  • He wasn’t born to become a god; He already was God.
  • He came to become a man, to walk in our shoes so that He could die our death and pay our debt.
The miracles were signs to those who had ears to hear and eyes to see.

The miracles were proof that Jesus was the Christ, the anointed One.

“Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me” (Matt 11:3-7, NKJV)

38Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, "Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.“ 39But He answered and said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Matt 12:38-40

Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven. Mat. 16:1

Others, testing Him, sought from Him a sign from heaven. Luke 11:16

III) THE PURPOSE OF MIRACLES TODAY

The point of signs and wonders in the life of Christ, and in the church today is to confirm the Word of God,
