1 Cor. 9:24-25 (MSG), “You’ve all been to the stadium and seen the athletes rae. Everyone runs; one wins. Run to win. All good athletes train hard. They do it for a gold medal that tarnishes and fades. You’re after one that’s gold eternally.”

Heb. 12:1 (NIV), “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”

3 Lessons Concerning the Race We Are To Run:

1)Run to Win

-As believers we must train with strict discipline if we’re going to win

Ask yourself “What is my ‘rabbit’? What has a tendency to get me ‘off my game’ in life?”

The race is only half over…

2)Run So That Others Win

We’re surrounded by those who have laid the foundations of our faith – our victory is their victory!

-The more I help others to succeed, the better I will run

John 17:20-23
1. The battle field of the mind
2. The battle field of the church
3. The battlefield of the heavenly places

Jesus said upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. (Mt. 16:18)

John 17:20-23
My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, (that’s us)
21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. (May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.)
22 I have given them the glory (dignity, honor, praise, worship) that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one:
23 I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son.

This one and only Son was appropriately named Jesus. Jesus is the Greek word for Joshua.

And if you truly want God’s word to come through your mouth it must first pass through your heart.

Isaiah 42:13
The LORD will march out like a mighty man, like a warrior he will stir up his zeal; with a shout he will raise the battle cry and will triumph over his enemies.

The wilderness is never meant to be a time of punishment for the people of God but rather a time of preparation and testing of our obedience to the voice of God.

Joshua 5:

It should cause us to bow our face to the ground and worship him.

Listen to the Spirit He is saying “Behold I am making all things new”.

It is time to incline our ears toward the voice of the Mighty Warrior so that we can hear and obey His every command.

1 Peter 2:1-3

1 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

1. MALICE; It means two things in the Greek.
    a. In a general sense it means wickedness, all kinds and forms of evil.
This word strikes at the vices of men.
     b. In a narrow sense this word means, deep seated feelings against a person, hatred that last on and on; or a long lasting and intense bitterness.

1 Cor. 5:8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
1 Cor. 14:20 Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.

2. GUILE: (NIV-deceit) It means to mislead people. The picture is of one setting out bait in order to catch someone, or deceive them in order to achieve their own end. Two faced.

Disguised in flattery, false promises, and suggestive talk, off colored suggestions, enticing words, and outright lying.

3. HYPOCRICY:

It is acting one way but being something else.
To put on an outward show.

    Saying we love God but don’t obey His word.
    Pretend to follow God but live the way we want.
    We act like we care for people but are filled with selfishness, envy and pride.
    Courting friends but having an ulterior motive.
    Making promises that are not intended to be kept.

Matthew 23:14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
Matthew 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves
Matthew 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

Proverbs 23:7
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

4 ENVIES: Intense coveting to the point someone is willing to do what ever it takes to get it from the other individual.

"You shall not covet your neighbor’s house, his wife or his servant, his ox or donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

Prov. 23:17
Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.
1 Cor.13:4
Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

5. EVIL SPEAKING: This means to criticize, judge, backbite, gossip, condemn or grumble against another person.

1.    Criticism boosts our self-image by pointing out others faults.
2.    Criticism enjoys speaking evil and by doing so exposes our sinful nature.
3.    Criticism is usually an outlet for hurt and revenge. We feel they deserve it.
James 4:11
Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.

The word desire means to crave or long for. This
The word milk usually refers to the food needed by immature believers. It is usually contrasted with the meat of the Word.

Eph. 4:13-15 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature (maturity)of the fulness of Christ:
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

Acts 20:32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

Luke 11:33-36

Victory begins with the name of Jesus on our lips. It is consummated by the nature of Jesus in our heart.

No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.
34 The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.
35 Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.
36 If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.

1. KEEP CHRIST CENTRAL

Romans 8:28-29
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. – (shew bread; bread of the presence; exposed before God)
29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Psalm 91:1
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

Jesus defeated the enemy in the Garden and on the cross not by going toe to toe but by fulfilling the will of the Father.

C.M. Ward a great evangelist of the past said “The only thing you need to know about Satan is how to dismiss him”.

The more we yield our selves to His nature the greater the fortress of His presence surrounds us.

2. REST BEFORE YOU CAN RULE

John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.

Romans 16:19-20
For the report of your obedience has reached to all; therefore I am rejoicing over you, but I want you to be wise in what is good, and innocent in what is evil.
20 And the God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.

PEACE – CRUSH

Victory comes by refusing to judge by what we see or hear and trust in what God has promised.

"Lord, save us! We're going to drown!"
26 He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

Phil 1:28 Whatever happens conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then,…I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel
28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved--and that by God.

PEACE IS SPIRIT POWER

23rd Psalm Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me

you come to me with a sword and a spear and javelin but I come to you in the name of the Lord Almighty the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 1 Sam. 17:45

before the throne there was, as it were a sea of glass like crystal Rev. 4:6

Rest precedes rule!
Peace precedes power!

REASONS TO LOVE FERVENTLY
1Peter 1:22-25                                    10/3/10 PM
22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:
25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

•    Agape is used as sacrificial love.
•    Éros  is passionate love,
•    Storge  means "affection"
•    Philia  means friendship in modern Greek.           .
    It binds them together as a clan.
    It binds one another together in an unbreakable union.
    It holds deep affection for one another.
    It nourishes and nurtures one another.
    It looks after the welfare of one another.

“Do I love my brothers and sisters in the faith this way?”

Unfeigned – Genuine sincere without pretension, hypocrisy, or play acting.
Fervent  - (ektenos) full intensity.
It literally means to “stretch love out” or to “love in an all out manner.”
In the Greek this has a very forceful meaning, which stresses the importance of it.

Three Reasons We Are To Love With Full Intensity.

1. Because our soul is purified. Vs. 22
Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit…
"purity in Gods children is not the outcome of obedience to His law, but the result of the supernatural work of His grace."
John 13:34-35
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

2. Because we have been born again by the Word of God. Vs. 23

“new men” and “new women”.

1 John 3:23
And this is his commandment that we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

Col. 3:10
And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

The third reason we are to love with intensity

3. Because we have a spiritual birth.
We have a new life, a renewed soul, and a regenerated spirit.

2 Cor. 5:17
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

We are spiritually born again:
1. By water even the spirit. John 3:5
2. By the will of God. James 1:18
3. By incorrupttible seed, even the word of God
     1 Peter 1:23
4. By God from above. 1 Peter 1:3
5. By Christ who gives both the power and the     right to be born again. John 1:12-13

A person proves he is born again: (Read verses)
1. By doing righteous acts. 1 John 2:29;
    Eph. 2:10; 4:24
2. By loving other believers. 1 John 4:7
3. By overcoming the world. 1 John 5:4
4. By keeping himself. 1 John 5:18
5. By possessing the divine seed or nature.
    1 John 3:9 1 Pet. 1:23; 2Pet. 1:14; col. 1:27

10-03-10 AM Sermon - Using My Affluence

Luke 16:11

Repeat after me, “I am richer than I thought!”

Psalm 24:1 (Living) “The earth belongs to God! Everything in the entire world is his!”

Few things test our faith and maturity more accurately than how we use money.

Luke 16:11(NLT) “If you are untrustworthy about handing worldly wealth who will trust you with the true riches of heaven?”

I.  You must first avoid the pitfalls of money.

1 Tim.  6:9-10, “People who want to be rich fall into all sorts of temptation and traps.  The love of money causes all kinds of trouble.”  Circle the phrase “the love of money.”

God wants you to love people and use things.

Pitfall #1.  Thinking that having more will make me happy.

Proverbs 27:20 (NCV) “People will never stop dying and being destroyed, and they will never stop wanting more than they have.”

Ecclesiastes 5:10 (NLT) “Those who love money will never have enough.  How absurd to think that wealth brings true happiness.  The more you have the more people come to help you spend it.”

John Taylor has written a book called Enough is Enough.

Pitfall #2 Thinking that having more will make me more important.

Luke 12:15(LB), “Don’t always be wishing for what you don’t have. For real life and real living are not related to how rich we are.”

Pitfall #3 Thinking that having more will make me more secure.

Proverbs 23:5 (TEV) “Your money can be gone in a flash as if it had grown wings and flown away like an eagle.”

Job 36:19(CEV) “Your reputation and your riches cannot protect you from distress.”

II. Apply the purposes of money.

(Worship, fellowship, personal growth, ministry and mission)

1 Timothy 6:17-19 (LB) “Tell people to use their money to do good.  By doing this they will be storing up real treasure for themselves in heaven.  It is the only safe investment for eternity.”

You can’t take it with you.  But you can send it on ahead.

1.  Use your money to express worship.
“Trust Fund”

Proverbs 3:9(LB) says, “Honor the Lord by giving Him the first part of all your income.”

Matt 6:21 (NIV) “For where your treasure is there your heart will be also.”

“The purpose of tithing is to teach you to put God first in your life.”

Luke 12:31 (Living) “He will always give you all you need from day to day if you will make the Kingdom of God your primary concern.”

Malachi 3:10 (NIV) “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the Lord Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.”

2.  I want you to use it to encourage fellowship.  “Mutual Fund”

Romans 12:13 (GW) says this “Share what you have with God’s people who are in need and show hospitality.”

Romans 12:10 (NRS) says “Love one another with mutual affection.”

“You can give without loving but you cannot love without giving.”

Hebrews 10:24 (TEV) “Let us be concerned for one another, to help one another, to show love and to do good.”

3. Use it to enhance your life.
“Growth Fund”

Proverbs 10:16 (NLT) “The earnings of the godly enhance their lives but evil people squander their money on sin.”

“Instead of trying to get people into heaven we should try to get heaven into people.”

Proverbs 23:23 (Msg) “Buy truth and don’t sell it for love or money.  Buy wisdom.  Buy education.  Buy insight.”

1 Kings 3:9 (TEV) “Give me the wisdom I need to rule your people with justice and to know the difference between good and evil. Otherwise, how would I ever be able to rule this great people of yours?"

4.  You use it to extend your ministry, to make a difference in other people’s lives.
“Equity Service Fund”

Ministry is: simply meeting the needs of others in Jesus’ name.
There are emotional needs.  There are financial needs.  There are physical needs.

Proverbs 11:24 (Msg) says, “The world of the generous gets larger and larger.  And the world of the stingy gets smaller and smaller.”

“Believe” – used 272 times in the Bible
“Pray” – used 371 times in the Bible
“Love” – used 714 times in the Bible
“Give” – used 2,162 times in the Bible

God so loved the world that He gave His only Son.”

Proverbs 28:27 (TEV) “Give to the poor and you will never be in need.  But if you close your eyes to the poor many will curse you.”

Proverbs 19:17(TEV) “When you give back to the poor it’s like lending to the Lord.  And the Lord will pay you back.”

5.  God wants you to use your money to extend your mission.  “Global Fund”

“We make a living by what we get.
But we make a life by what we give.”

2 Corinthians 9:13 “You will honor God through this genuine act of service.  Because of your commitment to spread the good news of Christ and because of your generosity in sharing.”

Lu 12:15 (ASV) “A man’s life is not in the abundance of things he possesses.”
