1JOHN 2:28-29

28 And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. 29 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

1.Do we keep His commands                           (2:3-6)
2. Do we love our neighbor (7-11)
3. Do you grow in faith (12-14)
4. Do you love the World (15-17)
5. Do you guard against the antichrist or false teachers. (18-23)
6. Do you have the Gospel abiding in you    (24-27)
7. Do you abide in Christ (28-29)

ARE WE ABIDING
(28) And now, little children, abide in him.
Abide: to dwell, continue, stay, sojourn, rest in or upon.

1. We believe Jesus is the Son of God.
1John 4:15-16 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

2. We walk in fellowship with Christ.
1John 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

3. We are quick to confess sin.

1John 1:6-10 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

4. We continue in the Word and know truth.
John 8:31-32 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

5. We also let the word abide in our life.
1 John 2:14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.

6. We experience the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit.
1John 4:13Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.

7. We dwell in unity and love with other believers.
John 17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

8. We bear fruit and live a fruitful life.
John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

8. We bear fruit and live a fruitful life.
Gal 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

9. We walk in love toward others.
1John 4:12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

10. We do the will of the Father.
1 John 2:17  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

11. We experience continued anointing.
1 John 2:27 27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

2. WILL WE BE CONFIDENT AND UNASHAMED AT HIS RETURN (28)…
abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.

1. Jesus Christ IS coming again.
Matt. 16:27  For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.
Rev. 22:12  And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

2. Our task is to be prepared.
“confidence” (parrisian) means boldness or assurance.
“ashamed” (aischunthomen) means to shrink back; to sense guilt and disgrace or embarrassment.

2. Our task is to be prepared.
Acts 17:31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

2. Our task is to be prepared.
Rom. 2:16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

3. THE PROOF OF ABIDING IS A RIGHTEOUS LIFE (29)
If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

Matt. 7:16-18 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

Matt. 12:35  A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

1 John 2:29 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

I am a soldier in the army of my God.
The Lord Jesus Christ is my commanding officer.
The Holy Bible is my code of conduct, Faith, prayer and the Word are my weapons of warfare.

I have been taught by the Holy Spirit--
trained by experience, tried by adversity and tested by fire.
I am a volunteer in this army, and I am enlisted for eternity.
I will either retire in this army at the rapture or die in this army;

but I will not get out, sell out, be talked out, or pushed out.
I am faithful, reliable, capable, and dependable.
If my God needs me, I am there.
If He needs me in the Sunday school to teach the children,

work with the youth, help adults or just sit and learn I’ll be there.
He can use me because I am there!
I am a soldier.
I am not a baby. I do not need to be pampered, petted, primed up, pumped up, picked up, or pepped up.

I am a soldier.
No one has to call me, remind me, write me, visit me, entice me, or lure me.
I am a soldier. I am not a wimp.
I am in place saluting my King, obeying His orders, praising His name, and building His kingdom!

No one has to send me flowers gifts, food, cards, candy or give me handouts. I do not need to be cuddled, cradled, cared for, or catered to.  I am committed.
I cannot have my feelings hurt bad enough to turn me around.
I cannot be discouraged enough to turn me aside.

I cannot lose enough to cause me to quit.
If I end up with nothing, I will still come out ahead.
I will win. My God has, and will continue, to supply all of my needs.
I am more than a conqueror.
I will always triumph.

I can do all things through Christ.
Devils cannot defeat me.
People cannot disillusion me.
Weather cannot weary me.
Sickness cannot stop me.
Battles cannot beat me.
Money cannot buy me.

Governments cannot silence me and hell cannot handle me.
I am a soldier.
Even death cannot destroy me.
For when my Commander calls me from this battlefield He will promote me to Captain and then allow me to rule with Him.

I am a soldier in the army and I’m marching, claiming victory.
I will not give up.
I will not turn around.
I am a soldier marching, heaven bound.

7. Heaven is a place of Reward or Inheritance

He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.

Eph. 1:13-14 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,

14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession--to the praise of his glory.

8. Heaven will be a Restricted Place

9. Heaven is a Place of Riches

Rev. 21:10-11;18-21 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God 11 It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.
9. Heaven is a Place of Riches
18 The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. 19 The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper,

Emerald – deep green
Sardonyx – white w/ brown streaks
Sardius – blood red
Chrysolite – yellow quartz
Beryl – green
Topaz – yellowish green
Chrysoprasus – apple green
Jacinth – blue
Amethyst – purple

Blue = deity
White = purity
Purple=royalty

Foundations=represent permanence
Walls=protection
Gates=provision
Streets=praise

10. Heaven is a Place of Refuge

No Sanctuary v. 22 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.

No Shadows v. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.

No Secrets v. 24  The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it.

No sinners v. 27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.

“I am the way, the truth, and the life…no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

5. Heaven is a Place of Relief

(vss. 4-5) He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."5 He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true."

Romans 8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

Matt. 7:14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

Matt. 7:21-23 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' 23 Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'
This passage troubled me this week

6. Heaven is a Place of Refreshing (vs. 6)

WHY? By Jack Hyles
I have heard the white-tipped tapping cane,
Which leads a blinded eye.
And then a darkened, lonely voice
Cries, “Preacher, show me why.”

I have caught a fiancée’s burning tears,
And heard her lonely cry.
She held an unused wedding gown,
And shouted, “Pastor, why?”

I have heard the cancer patient say,
“’Tis gain for me to die;”
Then look into his daughter’s face,
And mutely whisper, “Why?”

I’ve heard an orphan faintly say,
Who gazed into the sky,
“Tho’ Mom and Dad have gone away,
My preacher will know why.”

I have sat beside a tiny crib,
And watched a baby die,
As parents slowly turned toward me,
To ask, “Oh, Pastor, why?”

I tiptoed to my Father’s throne,
So timid and so shy,
To say, “Dear God, some of Your own
Are wanting to know why.”

I heard Him say so tenderly,
“Their eyes I’ll gladly dry,
Tho’ they must look through faith today,
Tomorrow they’ll know why.”

And so I’ve found it pleases Him
When I can testify,
“I’ll trust my God to do what’s best,
And wait to find out why.”

1 John 2:24-27 24 Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard                                       from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life. 26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. 27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him

Tests to know whether or not we know God
1.Do we keep His commands (2:3-6)
2. Do we love our neighbor (7-11)
3. Do you grow in faith (12-14)
4. Do you love the World (15-17)
5. Do you guard against the antichrist or false teachers. (18-23)

know (ido-to see) if we really know (ginosko-absolutely understand) God.

1John 2:3 And hereby we do know (ginosko –absolutely understand) that we know (ginosko –absolutely understand)  him, if we keep his commandments.

1 John 2:20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know (ido –to see) all things.

ginoskoed (understood) the gospel and do not know God, no matter what you profess or feel.

1. THE TEST – Does the gospel abide in you? (24)
(24) Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.

“remain” means abide, or dwell- it means not to be carried away with false teachings, or worldly pleasures and possessions.

Gal. 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

2. THE PROMISE – Eternal life (25)
And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.

Once we come to Christ we have eternal life.

Paul said to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

1 Thess. 4 tells us we will be “caught up” to meet the Lord. (seize, catch up or away, pluck, pull , or take by forse) 1 Cor. 15:51-52 says we will be changed in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye.

1John 5:11-12  And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

3. THE WARNING – Some seduce us away from Christ
26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.

The Gnostics -we get our word knowledge from this word gnosis (the learned or intellectuals). "Salvation is by knowledge - self-knowledge."

“I am the way the truth and the life no man cometh unto the Father but by me.” John 14:6

4. THE PROVISION OF GOD – The Holy Spirit (27)
But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

1. The Holy Spirit is the anointing

Rom. 8:16-17  The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

2. The Holy Spirit is the One who teaches us the truth.
“The Holy Spirit is an all-sufficient means of enabling believers to possess a knowledge of the truth.”

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

3. The Holy Spirit seals, guarantees, and assures us that we do abide in Christ.

2Cor. 1:22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

Eph. 1:13-14  In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Eph. 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

ginosko (absolutely understand)
ido – (see) Him at work in and through our life.

“What a day that will be”

TEN FACTS ABOUT THE NEW JERUSALEM

1.Heaven is a Real Place
“I go to prepare a PLACE for you…there you shall be also” Jn. 14

 2. Heaven is a Remaining Place (vs. 1)

In the end, all we have left is our soul!  All we will have in eternity is the treasures we send ahead.
Matt. 6:19-21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

3. Heaven is a Readied Place  (vs. 2 “prepared as a bride”)

And the Lord has spent a lot of time, and is sparing no expense in readying heaven for us. [2,000 years compared to 6 days]

1 Cor. 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

4. Heaven is a Place of Relationship  (vs. 3)
