A GLANCE AT SPIRITUAL GIFTS

Romans 12:3-8
3For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

1.    Ten Truths about Spiritual Gifts

1st Only believers have spiritual gifts.
1 Corinthians 12:7, “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”

2nd Every Christian has at least one spiritual gift.
1 Corinthians 7:7, “I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another.”

3rd No one receives all the spiritual gifts.
Romans 12: 6-8, “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.”

4th No single spiritual gift is given to everyone.
1 Corinthians 12:29-30, “Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?”

5th  You cannot earn or work for a spiritual gift.

6th The Holy Spirit decides what spiritual gift you get.
1 Corinthians 12:11, “All these [spiritual gifts] are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.”

7th The spiritual gifts you are given are permanent.
Romans 11:29, “For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.”

8th You must develop the spiritual gift God gives you.
1 Timothy 4:14, “Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you.”
1 Timothy 4:16 “Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.”

9th It is a sin to waste the spiritual gift that God gave you.
Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus said, “For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money. Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.’ But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

10th Using your spiritual gift glorifies God and grows you.
John 15:8, “By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.”

II. The Purpose of Spiritual Gifts

First, spiritual gifts are not for your benefit but for the benefit of others.
1 Corinthians 12:7, “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”
1 Peter 4:10, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”

Second, spiritual gifts are to produce maturity and harmony in our church family.
Ephesians 4:11-14, “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.”

Third, recognize that you have both a primary and a secondary ministry in the church.

Body –Soul- Spirit

III. The Definition of a Spiritual Gift

A spiritual gift is a special ability, given by the Holy Spirit to every believer at the moment of conversion, to be used to minister to others and therefore to build up the Body of Christ.

IV. Cautions about Spiritual Gifts
First, don’t confuse spiritual gifts with natural talents.

Second, don’t confuse spiritual gifts with the fruit of the Spirit.

In Galatians 5:22-23 Paul says, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, selfcontrol.”

The fruit of the Spirit show your maturity, whereas spiritual gifts show your ministry.

Third, don’t confuse gifts with roles.

Fourth, realize that using your gifts without love is worthless.
1 Corinthians 13:1-3, “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.”

There should be no excuses for not getting involved in ministry.

07-10-11 PM - How to Rule Like an Elder, pt. 2

HOW TO RULE LIKE AN ELDER

1 Peter 5:1-4 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

Titus 1:6-9 An elder must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, (there are differing opinions on what this means) a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. Since an overseer is entrusted with God's work, he must be blameless--not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. Rather he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.  Can anyone fit into this tall order?
1. A LOOK AT PETER (VS.1)

A. I am an elder-
B. I am an eye-witness to the sufferings of Christ-
C. I witnessed his glory-

2. A LOOK AT ELDERS DUTIES (VSS.2-3)
“Feed the flock of God”

a. Lead willingly not by force:

1Cor. 9:16 For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel! 2Cor. 5:14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:

John 4:34  Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

1Thes. 2:8 So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.

Rev. 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

b. Lead without personal gain as a priority.
- Nor as a profession
- Nor as a means for livelihood
- Nor as a means to serve humanity
- Nor because someone says you have a gift
- Nor because people say you would make a great minister

NEVER to be “the reason” for entering the ministry.

Phil. 3:8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ.

c. Lead without lording but by example.

The King James says don’t Lord over God’s heritage. And the NIV says don’t lord over those entrusted to you.

Mk. 10:42-44 But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.

3. A LOOK AT THE REWARD (VS4)

And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

Matthew 25:23 His lord said unto him, “well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.”

Rev. 3:11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

 LOVE GOD-LOVE PEOPLE-SERVE WITH PASSION

BECOMING PART OF A VIBRANT COMMUNITY

Acts 2:42-47; They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.
44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.
45 Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.
46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,
47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

4:32-37 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had.
33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all.
34 There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales
35 and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need. (Then he gives an example)
36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means Son of Encouragement),
37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles' feet.

Humility is defines as: lowliness of mind, or low lying; not proud, or haughty; not arrogant or assertive; reflecting, expressing or offered in a spirit of deference ( consideration of others) or submission, unpretentious.

Our level of humility will determine our level of unity, and our level of unity will determine the level of God’s presence and power.

Gal. 5:22-26 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.
25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
koinonia –which is often translated communion or fellowship.

We come together at one table, and celebrate one Lord, one death, and participate in eating one body (this is my body which is broken for you) and drinking one cup (this cup is the new covenant in my blood which is poured out for you). “We do everything because of Christ’ to look and act like Christ”

Block #1. You must be a believer.

Block #2 You serve in your gifts and where your needed. Serve!
Who am I discipling with my gift and am I being disciple?

Block #3 You’re concerned about the needs of others. 2:45; Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. 34 There were no needy persons among them.

Phil 2:1-8 1 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,
2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross!

Block #4 You’re committed to teaching. 2:42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching…

F.A.T. Faithful – Available – Teachable.

You can do a lot with some one that has a teachable spirit.

Block #5 You’re committed to fellowship. 2:42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship…

Block #6 You’re committed to breaking bread. 2:42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread.

Block #7 You’re committed to Prayer. 2:42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

“Prayer is to the soul what breathing is to the body.”

Matthew 16:24

Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

Becoming a kingdom class disciple.
1.Personally Pursuing Christ;
2. Becoming part of a vibrant community;
3. Serving out of our passions;
4. Reproducing His life in others.

Discipleship is all about displaying the qualities of the one we follow.

Element #1 FIND SOMEONE WORTHY TO PURSUE
“Oh you of little faith …do you still not understand.”
John 16:13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
Acts 1:4-5;8 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."                                                  8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Matthew 16:13 "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"
“But who do you say that I am”.
“Thou art the Christ the Son of the living God.”

John 1:29;35 “Behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.”

Element #2 LISTENTO HIS VOICE     (Know it)
John 10:27  My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
Exodus 3:1 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, "I will go over and see this strange sight--why the bush does not burn up." When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, "Moses! Moses!" And Moses said, "Here I am." "Do not come any closer," God said. "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground." Then he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob." At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.

1Kings 19:1-18 Read

1. It will always line up with what the Word says.
2. Does it bare witness with your spirit.
3. Be sure to get council from trusted proven leaders.
4. Does it carry a peace with it?

Element #3 FOLLOW WHERE EVER HE LEADS

John 12:26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.

And where I am, my servant also will be.

There will some things that will stand true for all of us:

Element #4 OBEY HIS COMMMANDS

Mat 6:15  But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Mat. 18:21-22  Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?" 22 Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.

Mat.8:22 "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."

Mat. 16:24 If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

Mat.19:21 If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

Lk. 9:61-62 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Lk. 6:22 Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.

Lk. 14:26  "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters--yes, even his own life--he cannot be my disciple.

John 21:22 Jesus answered, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me."

2Tim. 3:16-17  All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
