THE ALWAYS WAS, NOW IS

1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

1. The body needed to be disciplined, controlled, and taken care of as much as possible.
2. What was done with the body didn’t matter because it was evil and doomed to death.

Parallels to this teaching are seen still today:
A. Some concentrate on the body and its health through recreation and discipline, seeking to overcome the evil, that is, the corruption, disease, aging and the dying of the body as much as possible.
B. Others live as they please, eating and drinking and partying as they wish thinking that it matters little how they live.

Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
1 Cor. 6:12-20 Read.

1 John 1:1-5
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

We will look at “Five Truths Concerning Jesus Christ”
1. JESUS CHRIST HAS ALWAYS EXISTED  Vs. 1

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.                                                                                          Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

2. JESUS CHRIST HAS PROVEN WHO HE IS  Vs.1
The early disciples heard him speak
they saw the Son of God
Matthew Henry says they were eye witnesses as well as ear witnesses.
they looked upon the Son of God.
Jer. 9:24  But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

hey handled Him.
Greek scholar A.T. Robertson says this is a graphic word, the same word Jesus used to prove that He was not a spirit after His resurrection.

Luke 24:39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

3. JESUS CHRIST HAS REVEALED WHO HE IS  Vs.1-2
He is the word of life: This means two things.

First: He is the Word.

Secondly: Jesus Christ is the Word of Life.
(For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
We see two things in this verse: He came to earth and manifested the life to us.
He came to identify with man.

John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

John 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

2 Tim. 1:10 But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

4. JESUS CHRIST CAME TO EARTH  Vs. 3-4
3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

Joy (chara) an inner gladness, a deep seated pleasure.

There are many sources of Joy.
1. The fellowship of the Father and His Son brings joy.(1John 1:3-4)
2. Victory of sin, death, and hell brings joy. (John 14:28; 16:20-22)
3. Repentance brings joy. (Luke 15:7;10)
4. The hope of Glory brings joy. (Rom. 4:17; Heb. 12:2)
5. Prayer brings joy. (John 16:24)
6. The fellowship of believers brings joy. (1 John 1:3-4)
7. Converts bring joy. (Luke 15:5)
8. Hearing that others walk in the truth brings joy. (3John 1:4)
9. Giving brings joy. (2 Cor. 8:2; Heb. 10:34)

5. JESUS CHRIST PREACHED A WONDERFUL MESSAGE 5

A. God is light – He is light by nature and character.

Prov. 5:21 For a man's ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all his paths.

B. There is no darkness in God – The word darkness describes both the state and works of a person.

Romans 1:21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.

John 1:5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

1Thess. 5:4-5 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.
5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.

09-25-11 - Audio Update

Greetings,

About 3 weeks ago we lost our recording computer due to a leak in our sanctuary roof. Unfortunately we lost the previous Sunday's sermon as well as the ability to easily record sermons. We had thought that this computer would be replaced quickly by insurance. It has not yet. We have been swapping computers in and out in an attempt to continue recording. We will get the audio we have up soon, hopefully.

1 Peter 5:10-14
10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
11 To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
12 By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand.
13 The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son.
14 Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen.

In Matt. 28:19-20  Jesus gives a command to His disciples.
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.  Acts 5:41.
First he reminds them of God’s great resource.
10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory …

James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Titus 3:7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Romans 8:16-17 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Why would this be important for the believers to hear?
1. Eternal glory is not something easy to grasp. It’s almost foreign to us.
2. It is easy to be clouded by the hardships that we face in life.

Secondly he reminds them of God’s great provision.
10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

A. God uses suffering to Perfect the believer.
“perfect” means to make fit or join together; to restore.
It’s used of mending nets;
Restoring an erring brother;
Framing the body and the worlds:
And of the union of members in the church.

Matt. 5:48  Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

James 1:3-4 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.  4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

B. God uses suffering to stablish the believer.

“stablish” means to make stedfast, firm, solid, immovable.

1 Thes. 3:13 To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.

C. God uses suffering to strengthen us.

D. God uses suffering to settle us.

The word “settle” means to secure as in a foundation; to ground with security.
Eph. 3:17-21 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Third thing Peter reminds them of God’s great power.
11 To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen

The word “glory” is omitted in the oldest manuscripts and versions.  Dominion Greek, “the might” shown in so “perfecting,” you.
