18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" --which means, "God with us." 24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

I. EXPECT YOUR PLANS TO BE INTERUPTED. (18)

(1) Erusim (engagement, betrothal): legally the couple was married, but not living together, have not consummated the relationship. The erusim could last as much as 12 months. Tested fidelity, integrity. In order to break the engagement you had to get divorced.

In our culture you just say "let’s call it off."

(2) Nisuin (Marriage ceremony itself)

Joseph was planning on marrying his sweetheart, drawing up house plans, carving their marriage bed...BIG PLANS.

James 4:13-15 Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money." [14] Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. [15] Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that."

Pro 19:21 Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.

II GET GOD’S TAKE ON THE INTERUPTION

(1) He got to marry his sweetheart.
(2) He was honored to have been chosen to raise God’s only Son.

Consider God’s take Joseph did! Verse 20)

(1) PRAY:

I Thess. 5:17  pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

James 5:13  Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray.

(2) PERSPECTIVE: Put the interruption in proper perspective.

Luke 12:22 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 25  Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

Matt. 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

(3) PROVIDENCE: God is in control. He still has your hairs numbered.

Duet.32:4 He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.

Is.55:8,9 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord.
9 "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Ps. 145:17 The Lord is righteous in all his ways and loving toward all he has made.

Prov. 5:21 For a man's ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all his paths.

Rom. 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

02 TESTING OF OUR FAITH
1 John 2:7-11 7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. 8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. 9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. 10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. 11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

Luke 10:30
1. What’s yours is mine. (Robbers vs. 30 they stripped him of everything he had)
2. What’s mine is mine. (Priest/Levite vs.31-32 saw him and passed by on the other side)
3. What’s mine is yours. (Samaritan vs.33-35bandaged the man took him to an Inn where he cared for him and then paid the innkeeper to care for him)

Jesus said which one of these was a neighbor to the man that fell?

When we get together as the body of Christ we should be able to say what’s mine is yours and what’s yours is mine.

1. THE SUPREME COMMANDMENT: (7-8) Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

(1) It’s an old command-

(2) It’s a new command

Matt. 5:43-45 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; 45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

Matt. 5:45 says “that you may be the children of your father which is in heaven”

(3) True light shines and erases the darkness

2. THE PROFESSING MAN: (9) He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.

Matt. 7:21Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Titus 1:16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

3. THE OBEDIENT MAN: (10) He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.

The first is he abides in the light; that is in Christ.

The second thing said about this one abiding in the light is; there is no occasion of stumbling in him.

Romans 8:34-35 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

Romans 12:9 Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

4. THE BITTER AND HATING MAN: (11) But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

- Walks in darkness- He is wrapped up in everything worldly.

- Has no direction and is blind- He is blind to the needs of others but very much aware of his own needs and what he wants.

2 Cor. 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Eph. 4:18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
