1John 1:8-9 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1. Man is totally depraved (8)
“we have no sin”
There is not a person on the planet that can keep from sinning.
-The person that thinks he can control sin in order to come to God has a low estimation of God and to high of an estimation of himself.
-Rom. 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
-Rom. 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
-Prov. 20:9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
2. Confession is necessary (9)
it includes “ALL” our sins.
-To forgive us of our sins means that God forgives the guilt of sin.
-To cleanse us from all unrighteousness means that God cleanses us from all the dirt filth and pollution of sin.
-God is perfectly just or righteous therefore He must condemn and punish sin.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Isaiah.44:22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.
do we know that do we know do we know
13 You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. 14 The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself." 15 If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. 16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. 17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. 19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
Some have mistaken this freedom from dead religious acts as a license to commit sinful acts, as though they are no longer responsible for their own actions.
I. Learn to recognize your own inner voice. (vs. 19-21)
1. Acts that drown out the voice of God.
-Sexual immorality is sexual behavior that is not in step with Scriptural principles.
-Impurity are acts that are "dirty", unclean. Things done that defile the body to get a "rush" of pleasure.
-Sensuality (debauchery) are acts done to arouse the body. Pornography is such an act, or even leering at women (or men).
2. Acts that manipulate the spirit realm for your own good.
–Idolatry is the worship of another God or the extreme devotion to a person or organization that you hope will grant you desires.
-Sorcery (witchcraft) is the act of using supernatural means to gain power over people.
3. Acts that are meant to manipulate people.
-Enmity (hatred) is taking a position of antagonism or hostility toward someone.
-Strife (discord) is to compete against someone to win some "prize" that they may be able to get, but you want.
- Jealousy is when you guard what is rightfully yours; including the loyalty from people that you feel you are owed.
-Fits of rage is how you back people off who threaten you, your way of intimidating them into treating you with respect.
-Rivalries (selfish ambition) are when you compete against someone to get something that someone else has.
-Dissensions are when you quarrel with someone else to get your way.
-Divisions (factions) are when you actually organize opposition against those who won’t follow you.
-Envy is the ill-will you feel toward others advantages.
4. Acts that cause others to become or remain separated from God.
-Drunkenness (intoxication) cause people to become dependent on the source of the high.
-Orgies and the like a wild celebration, partying, often, but not always, including sexual activity.
1. Develop a habit of prayer and Bible study on your own.
2. Remain in godly relationships with people who will tell you the truth about yourself, or at least will ask the kinds of questions that make you think.
3. When you fail, confess your sin and repent.
II. Secondly, you need to know the Holy Spirits voice.
"stay out of the winner-takes-all conflict"
"be patient, that is, wait for your opportunity without complaining or manipulating".
"be sympathetic with people, consider them to be friends."
"your goal is to produce favorable results for everyone, not just yourself
"be dutiful to what I have called you."
"be gentle with them, I am not done with them, or you, yet."
"Reign in your horses, bubba."
How do you overcome the flesh to listen to the Holy Spirit?
May I suggest...
1. Pray until you are willing. Even Jesus had to pray until he was able to make his body go through an actual crucifixion. "Not my will, but yours be done" Jesus repeated.
2. Grieve. You may not get your way, maybe never. You live at the pleasure of the Lord Jesus Christ. He has better things for you.
3. Find joy in serving the Lord. Fake it until you make it, as the saying goes. But you will make it, and you will find new joy in serving.
1. THE CALL TO SERVICE. (CH 1) “you may run but you cannot hide.”
Don’t mistake your comfort for God’s approval of your prayer life.
“Get up and call upon your God, maybe He will hear you and we will not perish”
“The God of heaven who made the sea and the land.”
When you serve the Lord it may cost you something.
2. THE CALL TO SURRENDER. (CH 2)
If God cannot get your attention in your comfort He will get your attention in discomfort.
Jonah 2:9 But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is from the Lord."
3:1 Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time.
3. THE CALL TO SACRIFICE. (CH 3)
Nahum 3 1 Woe to the bloody city, completely full of lies and pillage; Her prey never departs. 2 The noise of the whip, and rattling of the wheel, Galloping horses And bounding chariots! 3 Horsemen charging, Swords flashing, spears gleaming, Many slain, a mass of corpses, And countless dead bodies— They stumble over the dead bodies! 4 harlotries, sorceries, Who sells nations vss5-19 the Lord rebuke.
19 For on whom has not your evil passed continually?
4. THE CALL TO SEE. (CH 4)
“This is exactly why I didn’t want to come here. These people don’t deserve to be rescued. Have you not noticed how wicked they are? Do you not know how many innocent lives have been brutally killed by these people?”
“slow to anger” (vs. 2)
What God wanted Jonah to see was; people are important to Him, even the wicked and disappointing ones. (Like you Jonah)
Verse 4 Have you any right to be angry?
“God” provides a worm to wither the vine, “God” provided a scorching east wind,(the word is also translated silent, either way a hard wind blowing dust on a hot day or no wind on a hot day are equally bad) and the blazing heat caused Jonah to be faint. And again Jonah says “it would be better for me to die.”
Verse 9 Do you have a right to be angry about the vine?
Jonah 4:11 But Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well. Should I not be concerned about that great city?"
What was God wanting Jonah to see? The same thing He is wanting us to see! 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
1 John 1:6-710/9/11 Pm
6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
Over the next few Sunday evenings together we will be exposing several misconceptions that man has toward their own sin and how they may interact with the presence of God. A. MAN CAN FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD AND STILL WALK IN SIN. B. MAN IS NOT TOTALLY SINFUL AND DEPRAVED. C. MAN CAN BECOME RIGHTEOUS AND SINLESS ON HIS OWN.
The first misconception we will look at is the idea that:
A. Man can fellowship with God and still walk in sin.
John will break his argument down into two parts.
1. TRUE FELLOWSHIP AND DARKNESS DON’T MIX (6)
Prov. 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.
Jer. 17:9-10 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? 10 "I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve."
John 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
John 1:10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
Prov. 4:19 The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.
2. TRUE FELLOWSHIP IS DONE IN THE LIGHT (7)
3. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
Acts 5:15 Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
1. The blood continually cleanses us from sin.
2. If we walk in the light His blood will always cleanse us from sin.
3. If we walk in the light we will continually confess our sin, and live in open confession before Him.
In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path, by shining His light on the right way.
Eph.1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Rev. 1:5 Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
1 Peter 1:18-19 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
1 Cor. 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
2Cor. 2:14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
2Cor. 8:16 But thanks be to God, which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you.
Luke 16:19-31 19 "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.' 25 "But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.' 27 "He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.' 29 "Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.' 30 "'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.' 31 "He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'"
1. Hell may be in your future even if you are presently prospering.
Luke 16:9I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.
Luke 16:20-22 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried.
2. Hell is a place of eternal torment and agony.
Luke 16:23-25 In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.
"torment." (Verse 23)
24, "I am in agony in this fire."
The word torment signifies to suffer pain, be in anguish, be in great distress.
Matthew 25:30 Jesus described Hell as a place of "outer darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth."
Hell is also described in the Bible as a place where the worm does not die and the fire is not quenched. (Mark 9:48)
In the Book of Revelation the Final Judgment is described as a "Lake of Fire."
In other places, Jesus said that it would be better to have of millstone hung around your neck and thrown into the sea than to go into the unquenchable fire. (Mark 9:43) Here’s the point, every description of hell that we have is one of suffering, torment and agony.
Some people have an image of Hell that is not based on reality.
Mark Twain said, "I’ll take Heaven for the climate and Hell for the society."
Ted Turner once said, "I’m looking forward to dying and going to Hell because I know that is where I’m headed."
Jerome Butler who is a convicted killer and scheduled to be executed told one of his death row companions, "I’ll wait for you in Hell!"
25 Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony,
He is a loving God; we like that but He is also a Just God.
3. Hell is a place without hope.
Luke 16:26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'
Hell is a place without hope.
4. Hell can be avoided if a person listens to God’s word and repents.
Luke 16:27-31 He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, 28 for I have five brothers.

RESET YOUR MINDSET
Romans 8:5-11
I. Evaluate your Mindset – search me, O God
II. Surrender your Mindset – you are controlled by the Spirit
III. Redirect your Mindset – things above, transform, capture, God-thoughts
IV. Encourage your Mindset – The Spirit can help you change! Resurrection life now and yet to come.
“You will never change what you tolerate.”
“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
“I know the plans I have for you…plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
I. Evaluating our Mindset (Romans 8:5-8)
5 Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;
7 the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. 8 Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.
-The word “mind” refers to disposition or attitude.
1. Ask, “Is this what God wants?”
2. Ask, “Is this consistent with life and peace?”
3. Ask, “Does this bring honor to God, or reflect hostility to God?”
4. Ask, “Who is in control here? The Holy Spirit or Me?”
“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24
1 Corinthians 2:10 “The Spirit searches all things….”
II. Surrendering our Mindset (Romans 8:9-10)
9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.
By surrendering our hearts and minds to the Holy Spirit who lives in us.
“if the Spirit of God lives in you” (or you “have the Spirit of Christ”), and “if Christ is in you.”
III. Redirecting our Mindset
Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-- his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Colossians 3:1-3 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
2 Corinthians 10:5 …we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
Philippians 4:8 Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
IV. Encouraging our Mindset (Romans 8:11)
11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.
the words spirit and breath both come from the same word, pneuma,
