THE LOVE OF GOD
1John 3:1-3 1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

Have We Experienced God’s Incredible Love.

1. THE PRIVILEGE OF GOD’S LOVE- Children of god.  1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

A. The love of God has bestowed this privilege of adoption on us.

Rom. 5:6  For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

Rom. 5:9-10 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

B. The World Does Not Understand Believers.

2. THE GREAT HOPE & MYSTERY OF GOD’S LOVE- Eternal transformation.

2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

John 3:19  And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

John 1:9  That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

1Cor. 15:49 And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

Phil. 3:21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
And several changes are promised to us:

1.The body will be incorruptible.

1 Cor. 15:42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:

2. The body will be a body of resurrected glory.

1 Cor. 15:43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:                                                                                             glory  to be full of perfect light; to dwell in the perfect light, brilliance, splendor, luster, dignity, majesty and the grace of God Himself.

3.The body will be a body of power.

1 Cor. 15:43 … it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:

THE INCENTIVE OF GOD’S LOVE- Purity

3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

Matt. 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

2 Cor. 7:1Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

your reputation intact.
your character intact.
your integrity intact.

NLT -Hebrews 12:1 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge cloud of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress.  And let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us.”

1. Understand the primary source of all my sins.

Mark 7:21 says, “For from within” underline that phrase, “out of a person’s heart come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder”.

prideful, envious, gluttonous, angry, greedy, slothful, and lustful; and pride

Our goal in this series is to do some replacement ministry.  If we remove pride, we want to replace it with humility.

Pride is defined, as excessive belief in one’s own abilities.
pride occurs when I think that I am better than someone else.
Pride occurs when I place the needs of others behind my own needs.

The first way that we are going to deal with our pride is to acknowledge that we have a problem with it.
2. Acknowledge my problem with pride.
A. Proverbs 11:2Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
B. Proverbs 13:10 Pride leads to conflict; those who take advice are wise.

In marriage you can either be right or you can be happy, but you can’t be both.  Pride leads to heartache, fighting, and divorce.
C. Prov. 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.

D. Prov. 29:23 Pride ends in humiliation, while humility brings honor. “Pride ends in humiliation.” So what’s the answer?
Humility brings honor.

It starts with confession. I John 1:9 “If we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong.”
confession; “to agree with”.
3. Humble myself before God.
Humility is pride in God.
humility is the ultimate act of strength.
But as long as you are prideful, then you are in a place where God opposes you.
James 4:6-7 But he gives us even more grace to stand against such evil desires. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but favors the humble.” 7 So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Hebrews 12:2 We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.

Its pride properly placed, not in us, but in God.
There are postures of humility. We practice them often; heads bowed in prayer, or kneeling down to pray.

Heavenly Father, thank You that You want us to finish well.
God, we want to lay aside all of the sin that hinders our progress from being all that You have called us to be.
So God, we acknowledge our problem with pride today.  As seeing ourselves as god, and not allowing You to be God in our lives.
Today, we humble ourselves before you.  We fix our eyes on Jesus, who gave us the model of strength and humility.
As we humble ourselves, may You decrease our pride and increase our humility.  Amen.

In the past 25 years, the number of dads present at their children’s births has risen from 27% to more than 90 percent.
More than 75% of men say they would trade rapid career advancement for more time with their families.

Psalm 68:5: “A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling”

1 Thessalonians 2:10-12: “You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed. 11 For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children,  12 encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.”

1. Thanks for being a good example.
“You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed.”
“holy,” which means that they were set apart for ministry.
“righteous,” meaning that their character and behavior was upright.
“blameless,” translated, “not able to find fault in.”
“One way to correct your children is to correct your example.

2. Thanks for caring for your kids.
“For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children…”

3. Thanks for encouraging your kids.
“to come alongside with instruction and insight in order to move someone in a specific line of conduct.”

3. Thanks for encouraging your kids.

First, you have what it takes to be a difference-maker. I love you and am proud to be your dad.

Second, God has places and situations already prepared for you today where you will have the chance to be a difference-maker, to bring light where it is dark and vibrant life where things are dying – pay attention!

He reminds them thirdly what King Solomon wrote in Proverbs 4:23: “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”

4. Thanks for comforting your kids.
“to come alongside with sympathy and concern.”
1 Thessalonians 5:14: “encourage the fainthearted”
“cheer up the discouraged.”

4. Thanks for comforting your kids.
When our kids are doing OK, they need encouragement.
When they’re falling apart, they need comfort.

5. Thanks for urging your kids to go deep with God.
“urging” means “to beg earnestly” and was used of an anguished appeal from one who is a witness.
(12)“to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into His kingdom and glory.”

Ephesians 6:4 “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”

It’s biologically easy to become a father, but biblically challenging to actually “father” our children.

6. Thanks for not exasperating your kids.
“exasperate” means “to rouse to anger” or “to enrage.”
Colossians 3:21: “Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.”

7. Thanks for bringing your kids up to believe.
Proverbs 29:15 says, “A child left to himself brings shame to his mother.”

8. Thanks for disciplining your kids.
“admonition” and carries with it the idea of a warning.
Literally, it means to “place before the mind.”

Proverbs 13:24: Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.

Grace without discipline produces spoiled brats.
Discipline without grace produces rebellious brats.

Hebrews 12:11 “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”

The purpose of punishment is to inflict penalty and focuses on the past.
The purpose of discipline is to promote growth by looking to the future.

9. Thanks for teaching your children.

10. Thanks for having a heart for your kids.
Malachi 4:6 “He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse.”

Romans 2:5 says that it’s the “kindness of God that leads us to repentance.”

There are no perfect fathers, except our Heavenly Father.
We can all be better dads if we will work at it.
We do not father alone.

Eric Liddell was a famous Olympian who ran in the Olympics in Paris, France in 1924. He was a devout Christian who went on to be a missionary to China. He chose to drop out of the 100 meter race rather than run on Sunday. Despite not being favored to win the 400 meter, he went on the win that race, earn the gold medal, and set a new Olympic Record of 47.6 seconds. His story is immortalized in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire.

Long-distance runner Paavo Nurmi of Finland was an Olympic champion, winning twelve medals (nine of them gold) in the 1920, 1924, and 1928 Games. Nurmi was famous not only for his achievements, but also for running with a stopwatch in his hand to check his performance. It’s good to know how you’re doing along the way if you want to win a long-distance race.

focus on Jesus when we ask for wisdom in handling our family matters.
focus on Jesus when we seek the sufficiency of His grace in every situation.
focus on Jesus when we see opportunities to care for others.
1. Spiritual Olympians keep their eyes fixed on Jesus.
What are some practical spiritual things we can do daily to fix our eyes on Jesus?
1. Read God’s Word
2. Be in an attitude of prayer
3. Sing to the Lord
4. Share your testimony with others
5. Take time to be alone with God
6. Ask yourself the question “what would Jesus do”(WWJD)
7. Review Hebrews 12:1-2. Remember the cloud of witnesses cheering you on.
8. Confess and remove sinful habits

2. Spiritual Olympians must depend on Jesus from the start to the finish of their lives of faith.
“We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from start to finish” (Hebrews 12:2a).

Philippians 1:6, we read, “He who has begun a good work in you will continue His work until it is finally finished on that day when Jesus Christ comes back again“.
“Be not conformed to this world, but let God transform you into a new person, by changing the way you think [and act]. Romans 12:2.

 3. Spiritual Olympians run their races with glory in mind. In Heb.12:2, it was said of Jesus that.. “He was willing to die a shameful death on the cross because of the joy that was set before Him. Now He is seated in the place of highest honor beside God’s throne in heaven.”
2 Tim:4: 7&8, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me – the crown of righteousness that the Lord, the righteous Judge will give me on that great day of His return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to His glorious return.”

4. Spiritual Olympians do not stop before they reach their goal. In Heb.12: 3, we read, “Think about all He endured, when sinful people did such terrible things to Him, so that you do not become weary and give up.”
“Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of the Lord”.
